Re-use, recycle for employment, empowerment

Berkeley’s Urban Ore,a comprehensive salvage yard, is the model for all re-use centers. We think the Coast is ready for its own version!

If we could re-learn to live like our grandparents’ generation, we would have much of what we need for the next thousand years, without making anything new. Throwing good stuff away is killing the planet and already filled the landfill at Caspar Transfer Station, which is now just a place where waste gets stored and trucked to be somebody else’s problem. We can do better!

Ever wish you didn’t have to go over the hill for an all-purpose salvage yard? Want to buy a set of used windows to build a cold frame or an old bathtub for feeding your horse? Wish you didn’t have to spend hard-earned money to make your DIY dreams come true? Want to try barter?

MendoPower has MUCH more than an idea – we have a large facility at 915 N. Franklin Street, currently being used using to store items for the auction. But with proceeds from the auction, it will become a community reuse facility for products not commonly found at local thrift shops. Local haulers and city officials have been positive, but we need YOUR energy and ideas.

We believe the Coast Re-use Center can be a money-saver for local contracting businesses, where they can take stuff instead of to the dump and teach us to sort it so other contractors can have it on a barter basis. We will see about taking old computers that still work and matching them with people who need them. We would like to repair appliances and other dump bound stuff. We think the re-use economy is a very bright business investment, and an opportunity to create jobs and to reduce the waste stream.

How Auctions Work
Auctions are fun!
Here’s how it works. You start by registering for a bidder number and presenting your driver license. You will have the chance to look everything over before and during bidding. When the auctioneer opens bidding on something you like, raise your bidder number in the air until the auctioneer sees you and until you win! Then pay after the auction for your item including sales tax. You won’t be interested in every lot up for bid. If you have no interest in the current offering, feel free to get up and get some food, beer or wine, go across the way to look at the stuff still coming up, or shop at Granny’s Attic! We expect that you laugh with and at our auctioneer. Beware! He might have a retort! If you want to bid, raise your bidder number and when recognized, put it down. If he misses your bid, keep your number up. Don’t worry about scratching your ear and buying a piano. That only hap- pens on TV! But don’t complain if you forget to bid on that priceless item until after he says “sold.” The auctioneer declares when the bidding is finished, and a final bid is a contract to buy. Items are sold as is. You can preview items before and during the auction. You must pay by cash or check, including sales tax, and remove your items by the end of the event. MendoPower crews can carry items to your car or deliver large items to you at no cost.
